American Bail Coalition Statement on Recent Arrests of Bail Agents in California

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (August 31, 2015) – The American Bail Coalition (ABC) today issued the following statement in response to reports of arrests of bail bond agents by California state and county law enforcement officials.

“ABC supports the enforcement of the law and supports the efforts of the California Department of Insurance to hold accountable those who violate the law,” said Jeffrey J. Clayton, ABC’s Policy Director.

“While the facts continue to be gathered, it is important to note those charged represent a small percentage of the more than 15,000 bail bond agents across the country who provide 24/7 assistance to those in criminal circumstances seeking financial support. It is important at this early stage that we respect the rights of those involved to have their day in Court.”

ABC represents more than 15,000 + professionals in the surety bail industry. Our members provide a vital link in our criminal justice system by helping to ensure public safety and partnering with state and local officials to help minimize risks and increasing incarceration costs.

ABC partners with state and local officials across the nation, including lawmakers, members of the judiciary and partners in the criminal justice system to develop best practices that maximize the pretrial release of criminal defendants and protect the general public.
